Papa flies like Superman to work every morning (Mama also goes to work, but first she brings me to school). Sometimes Papa goes to parent-teacher night at the school (when Mama has no time). One time he even picked me up from school (Mama does that every day). And one time he read to me at bedtime (Mama reads to me every night). Papa is a real superhero – until one day he wakes up with a fever and stays in bed (Can superheroes get sick?). With a quick, dynamic line, Jean-Claude Alphen’s picture book describes the everyday lives of a boy and his parents. Tongue-in-cheek and with subtle humour, the sympathetic story debunks traditional parental roles and stubborn gender stereotypes. The paternal superhero is demoted back to a normal human model in a friendly way. Papa is great, sure, but Mama is a real superhero, too!
