This book presents portraits of fourty Greek women. The entries span the centuries, moving from Sappho the poetess and Hypatia the philosopher and mathematician, to photographer Nelly’s, singer Maria Callas, and Professor Eleni Glykatzi-Arverel. What they all have in common is that they led emancipated, fulfilled lives. Role models to many women, they moved equality forward in the spheres of culture, politics, social life, pedagogy, and science, both in Greece and internationally. In her first book for young readers, renowned author, critic, editor, and translator Katerina Shina introduces readers to these women. The texts, which are to be praised for their factual yet elegant narrative tone, offer both female and male readers many possibilities for identification. The short biographies are kept to one page each and are accompanied by an artistic portrait created by sixteen renowned Greek illustrators.
