This internationally acclaimed comic tells the story of a brave girl named Magdė against the backdrop of real events in Lithuania during the Second World War. While the rest of her family is deported to Siberia by the Soviet occupiers, Magdė remains in Lithuania. She hides in the forests along with other villagers and witnesses and joins the partisan uprising. Eventually, she assists in a dangerous mission to blow up a Soviet train carrying tanks and lorries. With support from the text of Marius Marcinkevičius and with a keen sense of narrative tension, artist-illustrator Lina Itagaki provides earnest and compelling insights into the Lithuanian partisan movement and their fight for independence against the Soviet occupation. The multiple award-winning book conveys the drama and moral dilemmas of wartime chaos. An afterword provides historical context for the story. [KW]
