Opinions differ over the conflict in the Middle East more than over nearly any other issue. Due to recent tragic escalations, including the brutal terrorist attack by the Palestinian Hamas and violations of international law by the Israeli government under Netanyahu, the ongoing crisis has again become omnipresent. The authors explore the history of the conflict from pre-Christian times to the present day. Thanks to easily readable maps, the core problem quickly becomes clear: it’s about a territory that both sides claim as rightfully theirs. In this context, it becomes evident how the conflict has been inflamed by historical events such as colonialism and the Holocaust, how much the dispute is shaped by geopolitical interests of international actors, and how religion is instrumentalised. A significant achievement of the book is that, despite everything, it discusses potential solutions. After all, people of Muslim and Jewish cultures greet each other with expressions of peace that come from the same linguistic root. [OIS]
