M. B. Brozon’s gripping coming-of-age novel follows Inés, who wants to project the image of an ideal, exemplary family life, but realizes the harmonious facade has cracks and stains. Bit by bit, the longing and resolve to break free from her life grows, which means, among other things, freeing herself from her strict, conservative father’s control. This gradual, conflict-laden transformation is portrayed with sensitivity and nuance – in what the young woman experiences, how she acts, and how she thinks about herself and others. Like the protagonist, the other characters in the novel are rendered as credible and multi-dimensional individuals. The language is equally compelling – rich in register, vivid, and authentic. Page by page, the novel paints a multifaceted portrait of a teenager moulded by tradition, family expectations, and social norms, who, encouraged and supported by others, finds her own way to be herself.
