Karla is a vampire. She keeps this a secret as best as she can, not only because her best friend, Mila, is afraid of vampires, but also because vampires do, after all, have certain preferences (blood!). What’s more, they can do things that »the others« (i.e. humans) can’t, such as flying through the night on their own. However, when Karla’s fangs begin to grow, it becomes increasingly difficult to hide her vampire identity. That’s one of the reasons why her family thinks it’s high time she left the human school and transferred to a special one for vampires. Yet, does she really have to? Karla is sceptical and, besides, she wants to stay with Mila. In an original, empathetic, and warm-hearted way, Ayşe Klinge’s comic »Der Zahn« explores the process of coming of age with all its upheavals. Moreover, it shows that there is enough room for many lived experiences and social realities: for both vampires AND humans. [IG]
