A fearless chicken longs for adventure and dreams of finding a pirate’s bounty. A shy dog wishes for a best friend whose name is Marulan. Or Taluros. He just hasn’t shown up yet. So the dog and the chicken – “fur and feather” – band together and gradually realize they work well together, despite their differences! Lorenz Pauli and Kathrin Schärer work well together, too. The Swiss pair are a long-running, playful picture book dream team. Kathrin Schärer’s talent for drawing animals and Lorenz Pauli’s linguistic and dialogical wit make for entertaining books. The successful interplay of text and image and a dramaturgy that makes the story-telling transparent – chicken and dog act out their own story – leave room for reflection and imagination and create a multi-layered narrative. The picture book is based on the children’s opera by the same name, which was written by Lorenz Pauli (libretto) and Rodolphe Schacher / Charlotte Perrey (music).
